This small archipelago is located opposite the coasts of Carnota, in the middle of the Ria of Corcubión. The most outstanding of the islands are the two known as Lobeira Grande and Lobeira Chica (Big Wolf Den and Little Wolf Den).
The origin of these names isn’t very clear. Some believe that they are so called because in the past these islands were inhabited by sea lions, but others claim sailors gave them these names as they were considered a sailing hazard, waiting in hiding like wolves until a boat crashed into them.
Lobeira Grande, the larger of the islands, still conserves a lighthouse built on this site in 1906. It was originally inhabited by the lighthouse keeper and his family and therefore includes living quarters and a store, in addition to the tower and the lantern. Lobeira Grande was inhabited right up until the lighthouse beacon was automated in the thirties.
