This is the popular name for the Dunes of Corrubedo Natural Park, declared as such in 1992, and the second natural space in Galicia to have this figure of protection.
The geological complex of the Natural Park was formed 12,000 to 15,000 years ago during the Quaternary period. Although it covers little less than 1000 hectares, its dunes, beaches, lagoons and marshes host a great variety of habitats and ecosystems.
Vixán is a fresh water lagoon located by the sea and whose formation is due to the action of the waves and the wind on the coast, creating a spit, which isolated the water supply from the River Os Muíños in the form of a lake. In contrast, the lagoon of Carregal is salt water and is generated in the mouth of the Rivers Sanchanás or Artes, Longo, Sirves and Cidá.
But without doubt, the park’s fame is thanks to its dunes and especially for having the largest mobile dunes in northwestern Spain. Measuring 1 km long, 250 m wide and 15 m high, this sandy area is slowly and constantly moving, driven by dominant winds.
