The Costa da Morte is dotted with small islands and rocks – O Centolo, also called O Centulo or A Centola, is one of the most iconic.
This rock, rising 25 metres above sea level, is only 700 metres from Cape Fisterra and its outline forms an indispensable part of this landscape that is home to some of the most spectacular sunsets on the planet.
O Centolo has witnessed and played a leading role in some of the most notorious shipwrecks that have occurred on these coasts, such as those suffered by the merchant ship Bitten in 1878, the frigate Blas de Lezo in 1932 or the fateful sinking of the HMS Captain in 1870. More than 450 crew members of this British navy ship perished, making it one of the greatest tragedies to have occurred on the Costa da Morte.
